Will Run For (From) Food!

by Carilyn on August 25, 2011

It is simply amazing how my appetite increases with my mileage!  Sheesh!  Even when I was cross-training four hours a day, I wasn’t this hungry.  I want to eat EVERYTHING!  In fact, food has started chasing me!

Go away, Iced Cherry Pop Tarts!  I may love you, but you are wrong for me!  (Yes, I talk to my food.  And sometimes it talks back!)

So, the past few days have all followed a fairly consistent pattern: run, drive one son somewhere, work, run, drive other son somewhere, work, run, pick up both sons and take them somewhere else, run, make dinner, shower, swan dive into bead, snore.

Per Day Tally:

Run – 20 miles

Car – 45 miles

Calories consumed – 54,000

Cups of coffee consumed – 5

Work – 6 hours

Sleep – 8 hours

Really, I am so loving being back in full running mode.  I hope to be ready for a solid 24 Hour performance by late Fall.  Yes, it totally bites to miss Nationals, but it is all for the best (Texas is playing UCLA at the Rose Bowl that weekend, and since I am an Aggie, it is important to support UCLA 😉 ).  There is always a silver lining, and there is always another race.  24 Hour races take so much out of you, physically and mentally, that you don’t want to go into them on a whim.  I really only feel like I can do two a year without wanting to throw myself in front of traffic just to make the race end.  I want to be fully healthy and trained so that I don’t “waste” a race.

Since my weekdays have been so crazy, I haven’t been able to go do any “Crazy Fun Runs”. I’ve just been keeping it simple, running the canals…

Sunflowers growing in a canal

And the ‘hood…

I hope to have more free time this weekend to get out and run something fun.  I’ll keep you posted!  And I’d love to hear what y’all have planned!

Happy Running!

Carilyn, I am glad to see you in full training mode. Keep it going and keep up your postings. They are motivating. Reading about all that you do in a day makes me tired and hungry. Maybe I will pick up the Pop Tarts – since you have given them up! Got to run to the store. Thanks:)

8 hrs of sleep seems totally unattainable, I only had it while vacationing in San Juans this July. Never during my “normal” life, ever…but I keep dreaming about it when fall asleep on the bus, or need a coffee pick-up at 2pm:)
Glad you’re back and after a hefty goal!

I’m not normally a Pop Tart connoisseur, but now I want one!
Do you swim for cross training ever? When I swim I’m just as hungry as running makes me.
Glad you’re running happy!

Hi Olga! Yes, I probably should have put a disclaimer on the 8 hours – usually impossible with 2 teenagers WHO NEVER GO TO SLEEP! Really, I’ve decided I birthed the loudest children on the planet. I was just lucky this week with the 8 hours – probably had something to do with getting back to running.

Hi Steena! I do swim, but after 10 years as a competitive swimmer, it is not my sport of choice. I dive in and hear my coach yelling at me in my head 🙂

When I increased my mileage, I was eating everything in sight also. Pop tarts included. With that I gained a few pounds. I run high mileage constantly now, so I’m working on keeping my eating in check. It is time to start losing those extra pounds.

Hi Deloris! I know, every time I have to back off for an injury, I “forget” to cut down on the cupcakes, pop tarts, etc.! You’d think I’d know better by now!
