I saw this quote today and it made me wonder: Is Mr. Ruskin right? In order to be happy in work do we need all three dictates? I agree that it is helpful if we are fit for our work, especially if our work is running. The fitter I am, the more I enjoy to run! I also agree that I am happier with my running when I am successful at it. As much as I love training, doing well in a race is great fun! So, what about the the part telling us not to do too much? Is that true? I think I understand his point, but let’s be honest, in ultrarunning a lot is a good thing 🙂
I have often been so astounded and impressed by Jamie Donaldson’s 200 mile weeks. And Tony Kruprika’s ability to maintain 160 miles week after week. What about Monica Scholz’s 25 100 milers in a year last year? I think that is amazing! They are all phenomenal runners, and I have to think some of that is attributable to their ability to rack up the big miles. Yes, I know that “sharpening” (speed, hills, etc.) is important. But what about sheer volume? It seems like that plays a vital role in an ultrarunner’s success.
I understand Mr. Ruskin’s point that too much of a good thing is bad, but I think ultrarunning may be the exception. Excess seems to lead to success! Isn’t that cool?
Happy Running!
