The World Championships – Making Me Crazier Than Usual (And That’s Just Dangerous, According to Hubz)

by Carilyn on May 5, 2013

So, I leave tomorrow for the Netherlands and I’m so excited!!!  I can’t wait to see Amsterdam – it looks so gorgeous. Finally, all those episodes of House Hunters International that I watch while working out will finally pay off. Score! I’m sure that watching couples shop for “canal homes” is way more helpful than a guide book. (Hubz would now like you to know that THIS is exactly why he never lets me be in charge of vacation planning.)

Yesterday, I rounded out my taper week with an easy 20 miler – my favorite distance because it is an even number with a nice “zero” at the end. And it is always the point in the marathon where you want to quit, so on these training runs, I do. And then I yell, “Take that, you stupid WALL! You’re not the boss of me. I can stop whenever I want. Na na na na!” And then the other runners just look at me with concern adoration because I am a total badass when imaginary, non-existent, metaphorical WALLS are involved. So there.

And now I’m going to BROG (which I just made up to mean “bragging in a blog” – get it? Although frankly, most blogging is sort of bragging, right? So, maybe from now on we should just call it brogging. You can use that.). I’m flying to Amsterdam FIRST CLASS. No, I’ve not become a reality TV star since I’ve moved to LA (Call me, Andy Cohen!). No, I’m flying FIRST CLASS because I’ve had to pay for my kids’ school with my American Airlines credit card (you have to use a credit card to register online and since we are usually in Texas during registration, this is a must) and out-of-state tuition = LOTS and LOTS of airline miles. These miles have just been sitting around, getting a tan and drinking sangria because it’s a big pain to fly American from El Paso. But then, Voila! this trip to the Netherlands came up and now I am going to get slippers, eye shades and all the after dinner mints I want. Thank you Out-Of-State-Tuition!

I will try to keep up with my blog while traveling, but you know how that goes. If you are interested, you can follow Team USA on Twitter @USAultrarunning and Facebook U.S. National 24 Hour Running Team. There is supposed to be a live webcam during the race, so if you see me puking, crying, or whining, please look away. Oh, who am I kidding? We all know all three of those things are going to happen!

Happy Running!

Damn, I should have sent my kids to private school and paid for their fees with my credit card just so I could travel first class. I knew that there was something we were missing when we decided on public school but I didn’t realise it was extra leg room.

Good luck in Holland. My Aunts been over there for the last week and the photos whe’s posted are gorgeous. I hope you get to see some tulips. And the new King and Queen. And the end of the race in an upright position.

Have the BEST time! Amsterdam is fab and so are you. Take tons of pics, especially sitting in first class eating warm spiced nuts and accepting hot towels from sterling tongs. Cannot wait to hear all about it! Oh and run well of course!

Oh my goodness, Kim! You are so nice! Thank you so much!

As much as I will enjoy the use of the points, Char, I’m with you. Ironically, the high cost IS for a public school. In the US, if you don’t reside in the state where the school is located, you have to pay extra 🙁

Thank you, Marcia! I’m super excited (about the flight AND the running 🙂 )

So excited for you. Flying first class should ensure you rock even more than usual. Have a blast and run like the wind!
