Pie Day

by Carilyn on March 14, 2012

So, this morning, when I saw the Google design, I asked my sons if today was a holiday. Spencer said it was Pie Day.  Huh?  How cool is that?!  A whole day honoring one of my favorite desserts!  Yum!

The Bakery on Ladybug Lane

But with his look of disdain, I gathered we were not speaking the same language.

“No, Mom.  It’s Pi Day.  As in 3.14159… ” (and then he listed a bunch of other numbers that I don’t remember).

Ahhhhh….that kind of Pi.  Well, that’s a bummer.  Unless you are a math major, like my son.

And while he was shaking his head at my denseness (is that even a word?), I was marveling at how I have a son who is good at math when I have to go to the ATM just to “balance” my checkbook.  And I promise he’s my biological child.

This got me to thinking about how different each of us is, with weird (to others) likes and dislikes, talents and weakness, quirks and eccentricities.  I am truly fascinated by the little-known facts about people: how my best friend loves to clean out her refrigerator (seriously), and how the lead singer from Train aspires to be an ultrarunner.

So today, in honor of Pi Day, and all the people who love Pie and/or Pi, I thought I’d ‘fess up to some of my weirder likes and dislikes.  I hope you will share and do the same!

1.  I love Lawrence Welk.  There is something so soothing, and fun, about the sweetness of the show.  Everybody Polka!

2.  I didn’t like “Bridesmaids.”  There.  I said it.  I’m a geek, I know.  I thought it was gross and not that funny.

3.  I love the Mouseketeers.  I used to wear my hot pink Mickey Mouse Club ears and dance right next to the television set facing the “audience” as if I were on the show.

4.  I have always liked to go to bed at 9 o’clock.  Even in high school and college.

5.  I like Dance Moms.  Abby Lee Miller reminds me of my swim coach growing up, and those girls can really dance.  Yes, the moms are crazy, but that doesn’t take away from how talented their kids are.

6.  I did not like pizza, hot dogs, french fries, or hamburgers until I was an adult.

7.  I read the end of every book first.

8.  I love documentaries about obscure competitions – clogging, supermarket bagging, crossword puzzling – and eccentric people.

9.  If I get to choose my training run, I will always pick to run in loops, usually around my block or the park.

10.  I voted for Michael Dukakis.

What weird, different, or eccentric things do you like or want to confess to?  Keep it clean 🙂

Happy Running!

I’ve never had coffee and hate chocolate. And, it’s so funny you confess to liking Dance Moms…on our vacation we were at a party and half of the guests all ‘fessed up to being obsessed with the show. At least I can say I was a dance mom for 20 years – but not like these women!

That’s too funny, Anne! I bet you get the same kinds of looks I do when I say I hated Bridesmaids when you say you don’t like coffee and chocolate!

My view on Bridesmaids was the same. I almost puked. My son picked it to watch with me, so I had to finish it. Gross, indeed.

Yay! I love it! Finally another woman who didn’t like Bridesmaids! 🙂

Do I have to pick just one?? Well for starters:
1. I love the Monkees and am very sad that Davy Jones passed away.
2. I like to put peanut butter on my pancakes and waffles along with my syrup.
3. Salt is awesome on chocolate cake.
4. I like to cross my big toes together when I’m sitting on the couch.
5. My favorite movie is American History X – dark and disturbing, I know.
6. I can spit and hack up loogies better than any man I know.
7. I love – absolutely love – cemetaries. I find them very calming and peaceful, plus I love looking at the headstones to see what was said about people after they’re gone.
8. I was the captain of the flag corps team in high school…dork!!

If I was giving away a prize today, Michele, you would definitely win! Those are great!

I have an entire blog devoted to my quirky interests disguised as a running blog! I was almost in that documentary about the crossword puzzle championships – I can do the New York Times puzzle in 4-5 minutes – but I was never quite in the right place at the right time.

That is exactly why I love your blog, Steve! And how cool that you were almost in that documentary – it was great! Those puzzlers are simply amazing!
